Abstract Building on recent developments in the literature, this article addresses a prominent research question study of civil conflict: what explains violence against civilians? We use novel computational model to investigate strategic incentives for victimization network setting; one that incorporates civilians’ behavior. argue conflicts with high competition—where conflict between any two actors is more likely—lead higher rates civilian victimization, irrespective conflict's overall intensity or total number actors. test our theory cross-national setting using event data generate measures both and density. Empirical analysis supports model's finding systems levels competition are associated level population.

Military Empowerment and Civilian Targeting in Civil War
Civilians constitute a large share of casualties in civil wars across the world. They are targeted to create fear and punish allegiance with the enemy. This maximizes collaboration with the perpetrator and strengthens the support network necessary to consolidate control over contested regions. I develop a model of the magnitude and structure of civilian killings in civil wars involving two arme...

Are civilian attitudes a useful predictor of patterns of violence in civil wars? A prominent debate has emerged among scholars and practitioners about the importance of winning civilian “hearts and minds” for influencing their wartime behavior. We argue that such efforts may have a dark side: insurgents can use pro-counterinsurgent attitudes as cues to select their targets and tactics. We condu...
متن کاملUnderstanding Civil War Violence through Military Intelligence: Mining Civilian Targeting Records from the Vietnam War
Military intelligence is underutilized in the study of civil war violence. Declassified records are hard to acquire and difficult to explore with the standard econometrics toolbox. I investigate a contemporary government database of civilians targeted during the Vietnam War. The data are detailed, with up to 45 attributes recorded for 73,712 individual civilian suspects. I employ an unsupervise...

We use a unique database from the Registr...

We explore the connection between inequality and civil conflict by focusing on the mediating role of ethnic identity. Using over 200 individual-level surveys from 89 countries, we provide a new data set with countryand group-level measures of inequality within and across ethnic groups. We then show that consistent with Esteban and Ray’s (2011) argument about the need for labor and capital to fi...
